The Bahamas, Andros Island Bahamas, At 2,300-square-miles, Andros is the largest and least-explored island in The Bahamas. Its waters, however, are well known to scuba divers and snorkelers, thanks to the second-largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere, and the island's standing as the bonefishing capital of the world. Andros is rich with history, culture and ancient rituals. Since before the 1400s, immigrants from Africa to South America have traveled far across the oceans to settle her shores. These brave voyagers brought with them customs and traditions as varied as the lands from which they came. Andros is truly a melting pot of different races, religions and economic backgrounds whose descendants have come to live in harmony and realize that when you live in paradise, there are no bad days. That is the peaceful beauty of the Androsian people.

The diverse topography which rises from these tropical waters is full of life, some of which can only be found on Andros. Over forty kinds of wild orchids, rare, endemic birds, wild boar, four-foot-long iguanas and a recently discovered tribal group all make their homes among the miles of deserted beaches, freshwater mud flats, thick brush, lush pine forests and inland waterways that make up this Atlantic oasis. It is even said to be the home of pirate Henry Morgan’s buried treasure and two mythical creatures—the chickcharnies and Lusca.

The major settlement is Fresh Creek, the hub of Central Andros’ social and economic activity. Here you can participate in outdoor activities such as snorkeling in Capt’ Bill’s Blue Hole or with wild dolphins, a safari up Fresh Creek, an inland waterway, and bird watching. At the Androsia Batik factory, you can get a firsthand lesson in how the unique fabric is made. The colorful patterns are famous throughout the Bahamas.

Staniard (or Stanyard) Creek

A picturesque waterfront settlement on creek and ocean with a beautiful expanse of secluded palm fringed beach. It is home to Kamalame Cay, an adventure resort offering bone-fishing, scuba diving snorkeling, kayaking and birding.

Love Hill

This settlement boasts a long sandy beach. Nearby is Capt. Bill’s Blue Hole, one of Andros’ largest blue holes (diameter 400 feet) complete with diving platform. The Central Andros High School is also found here.

Small Hope

The hub of activity here is Small Hope Bay Lodge, a rustic, family-owned and operated lodge. It offers a wide selection of ecotourism activities, ranging from diving, fishing, kayaking to safaris, bike tours and nature walks. Small Hope Bay Lodge is a major dive facility for those who want to experience the sheer 6,000 foot drop off the reef wall bordering the “Tongue of the Ocean” or cave diving in the blue holes.

Fresh Creek

This the administrative center of Central Andros, the site of the old St. Stephens Anglican Church, Coakley House (former residence of the Commander of the Royal Navy) and location of an upscale bone-fishing resort called Point of View Villas. Located on the north side of Fresh Creek are restaurants, shops and the commercial docks. A picturesque bridge connects the two parts of Fresh Creek (Coakley Town and Andros Town) and on the south side of the creek is where you will find the Lighthouse Yacht Club and Marina, a well-preserved lighthouse, the Androsia Batik Factory and the Fresh Creek (Andros Town) airport.

Bowen Sound

Formerly known, as Tom Sound, this is the home of the first Bahamian gospel group, The Andros Jubilee Singers, who were inspired by the death of Harcourt Mackey, an able fisherman, in 1961.

Cargill Creek

This settlement boasts three fishing lodges: Andros Island Bonefish Club, Mount Pleasant and Creek Side Lodge. Visitors can still see the well and containers at the former Margarita Sisal factory, which began operation in 1885.

Behring Point

This is the last settlement at the south end of the northern mainland of Andros. St. Mary’s Catholic Church was constructed in 1920. Several bonefishing lodges (Tranquility Hill, Charlie’s Haven, Nottage Cottage and the Bang Bang Club) are found in this area, which joins a series of fla.
